The Photogenic Quest

Today was the dreaded picture day at the school I teach at. Picture day can turn in to a nightmare of teenage angst proportions as quickly as the click of a camera shutter. A student asked me to do his tie for him and we had to turn to trusty old YouTube for a step-by-step tutorial. I nearly choked him on the first attempt which certainly amused the rest of the class. But alas, a teacher’s duty never ends at just teaching academics. One day this young man will walk in to his first interview and remember “Madame Mazzei nearly broke my trachea teaching me how to look professional.” …Probably not, but a teacher can dream!

Picture day is always more anxiety riddled for girls than boys. Ease my hair okay? Do I have something in my teeth? Is that hideous blemish under enough layers of concealer? Do I have a double chin? To be honest, the same worries flash in my mind every time I stare down a spontaneous lens that a friend whips out. I much prefer taking the pictures to being in them.

I always thought practicing my smile in front of the mirror was self-indulgent but according to Ruth of A Model Recommends (one of my favourite beauty blogs), it is useful practice if you struggle with finding your good side. These fun Dos and Donts of picture taking video has useful tips to help you take your next best frame.
